Charles George Martone

Contemporary Sculptor &

Multidisciplinary Artist

Working primarily in wood

Charles George Martone is a contemporary sculptor and multidisciplinary artist whose work explores form, movement, balance, and transformation. Working primarily in wood, his practice is deeply intuitive—allowing the material itself to help determine the direction of each piece.

His sculptural work often begins with an ordinary material and a curiosity about what might exist beneath its surface. In his layered plywood pieces, Charles carves and shapes through repeated planes of wood, revealing patterns, contours, and movement that emerge only through the process itself. The result is work that feels both organic and architectural—shaped as much by discovery as by design.

That sensitivity to structure and movement has been cultivated over more than 25 years through Charles's parallel career as a chiropractor. His approach, known as Structural Unwinding, moves beyond the traditional “crack-'em-up” chiropractic style. It is intuitive and sculptural, requiring an understanding of tension, balance, alignment, and the subtle ways one form influences another.

Outside the clinic, those same instincts find expression through wood, sculpture, furniture, and painting. During the early months of the pandemic, Charles—like many—was called to look inward and return more deeply to a lifelong creative impulse: the beauty of wood, the process of shaping, and the joy of making something by hand.

What began as exploration became an evolving body of work—one guided by material, movement, and the belief that sometimes the final form isn't imposed upon an object, but discovered within it.
